Sensory-Friendly Sun Protection Tips For Aussie Summer

Sun protection is vital for everyone, especially in Australia, but it can be challenging for children with sensory aversions, as sunscreen, hats, and protective clothing can present overwhelming textures or routines. If you're navigating this with your little one, here are some practical and creative tips to make sun safety a little easier.

1. Involve Your Child in Choosing Sun Smart Gear

First up, let them take the reins a little! Kids love having a say, so let them choose their sun-smart gear. Hats that feature their favourite characters or fabrics that feel nice against their skin can make a huge difference.

Many in our community have also shared that removing tags from clothing can greatly improve its feel on the skin. Light, breathable fabrics like cotton, linen, or bamboo have tighter weaves, providing great UV protection and a soft, gentle feel.

2. Sunscreen Protection Tips for Skin Sensitivities

When it comes to sunscreen, experimenting with how it’s applied can make a world of difference.

First up, it’s worth experimenting with the different textures that sunscreen comes in - sprays, gels, lotions and fluids, to name a few, are examples of how sunscreens are now formulated, so shop around and find which feels right on yours or your little one's skin.

Adding to this, consider smells as well as texture. Whilst most sunscreens are fragrance-free, there is the undeniable "sunscreen smell" from the more commonly used brands and formulations. While they often come at a higher price point, brands are now formulating clear, scent-free, broad-spectrum sunscreens to cancel out many of these concerns.

Beyond the product itself, the application can be tricky, too. For a gentler, more soothing sensation, try using a foundation brush to apply sunscreen—this mum hack can work wonders for kids who dislike lotions on their hands or skin.

Another popular option for sun protection tips is switching to a roll-on sunscreen. If your sunscreen of choice doesn't come in roller form, don't panic! You can grab empty ones online from retailers like Amazon and fill them with your favourite sunscreen. This simple change can help make sunscreen time more predictable and comfortable.

3. Create Shade and Plan Ahead

Planning can go a long way when it comes to outdoor play. Look for shaded areas, like under trees, or use a pop-up tent or big umbrella to create a safe spot. If you’re heading to the park or beach, consider visiting during lower UV times, such as early morning or late afternoon. This is a great way to dodge the harshest rays while still soaking up the fun.

4. Build a Predictable Sun Safety Routine

Creating a routine around sun safety can help reduce surprises and make it more predictable for your child. Talk to them about why sun protection is important in a way they can relate to, and use visuals or simple routines to guide them through the process.

Small choices such as “Which hat do you want to wear?” or “Do you want to help me with sunscreen or wear a long-sleeve shirt?” can give them a sense of control while keeping them protected.

For some children, providing notice before actions, such as before applying sunscreen or changing clothes, can support easier transitions and avoid surprises.

Remember, every brain is different, and what works for one individual may not work for you, and that's okay. Take your time to discover what feels right for your child. Sun safety is about teamwork. Let your child know you're working together to stay safe and enjoy summer adventures.
