Australia now has a National Autism Strategy and Action Plan (2025-2031), a significant step toward creating a safer, more inclusive society for Autistic individuals. At The Giggle Garden, we’ve reviewed the action plan and believe it’s a promising beginning. However, there’s still a long way to go - particularly in ensuring accountability, genuine autistic-led frameworks, and measurable outcomes.
The strategy’s vision is clear: a safe and inclusive society where all Autistic people are supported to thrive. Its overarching goal is to improve the quality of life for Autistic individuals in ways that matter to them.

Key Areas of Focus:
Social Inclusion: Enhancing understanding, acceptance, and integration of Autistic individuals in society, improving safety, welfare, and social connections.
Economic Inclusion: Increasing employment opportunities, inclusive workplaces, and leadership representation for Autistic individuals.
Diagnosis, Services & Supports: Advocating for neurodiversity-affirming, accessible services, improving diagnostic accuracy and accessibility, and supporting those navigating the diagnosis process.
National Autism Strategy Immediate Actions (2025-2026):
Investments in peer support programs, awareness campaigns, and educational initiatives to reduce stigma and improve autism acceptance.
Expanding access to services, particularly for underrepresented communities.
Foundations for Long-Term Reform:
Evaluating and improving existing services to ensure inclusivity and accessibility.
Developing neurodiversity-affirming services and creating certification programs for service providers.
Establishing governance frameworks to ensure Autistic individuals co-lead strategy development.
Promoting Research & Collaboration:
Investing in research co-led by Autistic individuals to improve understanding and inform best practices.
Creating a knowledge translation body to ensure research directly impacts policies and real-world outcomes.
Adopting a whole-of-government approach to ensure collaborative, cross-departmental efforts.
Our Perspective
While this strategy is a positive step, the effectiveness will depend on how the action plan is implemented. Ensuring Autistic-led accountability frameworks, avoiding tokenism, and delivering measurable outcomes must remain priorities. The investment in neurodiversity-affirming practices and co-leadership with Autistic individuals provides a hopeful path forward, but the journey ahead requires steadfast commitment and genuine action.
At The Giggle Garden, we’re optimistic but cautious with an ever-evolving Australian political landscape. We’ll continue to monitor developments, advocate for progress, and support the Autistic community in any way we can. Let’s hope this strategy plants the seeds for meaningful, lasting change.
